LIVING WITH ANIMALS

Seeing with Animals is a component of Living with Animals, a conference centered on our ever-present relationships with animals examined through the arts and humanities, sciences, and applied fields. Since 2013, Living with Animals has been held biennially at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), facilitated by Dr. Robert Mitchell. EKU is located in Richmond, KY, just south of Lexington, "The Horse Capital of the World," and began offering the first undergraduate degree in Animal Studies in 2010.

EXHIBITION

An exhibition of selected artworks is digitally displayed during the conference and included in an exhibition booklet. A selection of submissions is shown on the SWA website. Invited are submissions of work that respond to the Seeing with Animals conference theme; works produced in all media are welcome.

While Seeing with Animals will not be explicitly represented at the 2019 Living with Animals conference, the call for artist entries is generally announced in March of the year prior.

ARTIST BOOKS

Artists who are selected for the exhibition are invited to submit an artist book relating to the conference theme. Artist books are on display for the duration of the conference, then donated to the Living with Animals Conference Collection in Special Collections and Archives at the Crabbe Library at EKU. The books are accessible to students in the Animal Studies program at EKU, as well as other library users and researchers. 

PORTFOLIO REVIEWS

The conference features opportunities for both informal and formal portfolio reviews. During the informal portfolio sharing session, conference artists may display their work (digital via laptop/tablet, prints/portfolios, artist books, or small 3D artworks) and answer questions and field comments from conference participants. Formal portfolio reviews are roughly 15 minutes in length; registrants may sign up to review portfolios, have their work reviewed, or both.
